Dunnottar Castle
Perched on a rugged headland just south of Stonehaven (≈35 mins from Royal Arch), Dunnottar is one of Scotland’s most photogenic ruins.
Why It Matters
Dunnottar sheltered the Honours of Scotland (Scottish Crown Jewels) in the 1650s during Cromwell’s siege — spirited away and hidden until the Restoration. Today the sprawling 15th–16th century complex rewards explorers with dramatic sea views and a memorable clifftop approach.
Stonehaven: Make a Day of It
- Harbour & Old Town: colourful boats, seafood spots and a scenic path to the War Memorial.
- Hogmanay Fireballs: New Year’s Eve sees flaming cages swung through the streets — a unique local tradition.
- Open-air Heated Pool: historic seafront lido (seasonal) on the promenade.
