The Mysterious Blue Door
A painted gate in Edzell’s old estate wall opens onto woodland paths beside the River North Esk — salmon leaps, pools and the aptly named Rocks of Solitude.
A Short History
Sections of the gorge-side path and steps are said to have been cut by Napoleonic prisoners of war working locally in the early 19th century. You’ll spot carved stones and old waymarkers along the route.
The Walk
- Distance: 4–6 km options
- Terrain: woodland paths, roots and short rock steps (slippy after rain)
- Good to know: take care near unfenced drops; keep dogs close by the water
